Hypnotherapy is safe for most people. You remain aware and in control, you can't be made to do anything against your will, and you can't get stuck in hypnosis. It isn't suitable for everyone, including some people with psychosis or certain types of epilepsy, which is why a good hypnotherapist checks your health first.
Myth 1: I'll lose control
You stay aware throughout and can speak, move or open your eyes at any time. Hypnotherapy is about gaining control, not losing it.
Myth 2: I could be made to do something I don't want to
No. You won't accept any suggestion that goes against your values. Stage hypnosis works because volunteers are willing performers.
Myth 3: I might get stuck
It isn't possible. If I stopped talking, you would simply drift back to normal awareness or fall into a natural sleep and wake up.
Myth 4: Only weak-minded people can be hypnotised
The opposite is often true. Focus and imagination help, and analytical people often respond well.
Myth 5: It's like being asleep
Most people feel deeply relaxed but aware, similar to the moment just before sleep or being absorbed in a book.
Myth 6: It will reveal my secrets
You choose what to share. Nothing comes out that you don't want to say.
Myth 7: One session fixes everything
Some fears shift in a single session, but most change happens in layers over a few sessions. Be wary of anyone who promises instant cures.
