What is hypnotherapy, and will I be in control?
Hypnotherapy uses a calm, focused state, a bit like being absorbed in a good book, to work with the subconscious part of the mind that runs habits, emotions and automatic reactions. You are aware and in control the whole time and can open your eyes whenever you like. Most people find it deeply relaxing.
Is hypnotherapy safe?
Yes. Hypnosis is a natural, focused state you already drift into when you're absorbed in a film or a long drive. You stay aware, you can speak, and you can open your eyes at any point. Hypnotherapy isn't suitable for everyone, for example some people with psychosis or certain forms of epilepsy, so I'll check your health on the free call.
Can everyone be hypnotised?
Almost everyone can enter a light to medium state of hypnosis, and that is all the work needs. People who think they're too analytical often respond well, because the process works with how they already think.
Will I remember the session?
Usually, yes. Most people remember most of what was said, rather like remembering a conversation while half-dozing. Some details may feel dreamlike.
How is hypnotherapy different from talking therapy or CBT?
Talking therapies mainly work with the conscious, reasoning mind. Hypnotherapy works with the subconscious, where habits, emotional reactions and long-held beliefs live. Many clients come to me after talking therapy helped them understand a pattern but didn't make it go away.
What if I can't relax?
That's a very common worry and it's fine. I'll guide you step by step, and you don't need to do anything special. Nervous first-timers usually relax more than they expect.
What if something painful comes up?
It sometimes does, and that's part of the work. I'll go at your pace and you stay in control. You never have to share anything you'd rather keep private.
Do you offer sessions in person or online?
Both. You can see me in person in Forest Row, East Sussex, close to East Grinstead, or online by Google Meet from anywhere in the UK or abroad. Online sessions work just as well for most people, and many clients prefer being in their own space.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on what you would like to change. Some people feel a real shift after one session. Most choose a block of three or six because change tends to happen in layers. We'll talk it through honestly on your free call.
Does online hypnotherapy work as well as in person?
For most people, yes. Hypnosis relies on your voice, your attention and a calm space, all of which work by video. Many clients find it easier to relax at home.
Do I have to pay in advance?
Yes, sessions are paid before we meet, by bank transfer or PayPal. Block bookings can be paid in full or in two instalments.
Do you offer payment plans?
Yes. Block bookings can be split into two payments, and other arrangements can be discussed privately.
Where are in-person sessions held?
In a quiet, private room in Forest Row, East Sussex (RH18). The full address and parking details are sent when your booking is confirmed.
Is what I share confidential?
Yes. Everything you share stays between us. The only exception is if I believed you or someone else was at serious risk of harm, and I would always try to talk with you first.
Is hypnotherapy a replacement for medical treatment?
No. Hypnotherapy is a complementary approach. If you have a medical or mental health condition, please keep your GP involved, and don't stop any treatment without their advice.
