Hypnotherapy for Fear of Flying: How It Can Help

If a fear of flying has been deciding where you go on holiday, it doesn't have to stay that way.

A fear of flying is usually a learned alarm response that the subconscious keeps repeating to protect you. Hypnotherapy works with that response directly, helping your mind relearn calm and rehearse the journey feeling in control. Specific fears often respond in one to three sessions, so it's worth starting a few weeks before you travel.

Why the fear doesn't listen to reason

Most people with a fear of flying know the facts. They've heard that flying is safe, and it makes no difference. That's because the fear isn't stored as a thought you can argue with. It's an automatic response, often triggered by a single moment years ago, and the subconscious has been trying to protect you ever since.

How hypnotherapy works with it

In a calm, focused state we can reach that protective response directly. We look at where it began, release the fear attached to it, and rehearse each part of the journey, from packing to take-off to landing, feeling calm and in control. Your mind learns a new response through repetition, not willpower.

What you'll take with you

You'll learn a short self-hypnosis and breathing technique to use at the airport and on the plane. Many clients find that knowing they have a tool of their own takes the edge off before they even travel.

When to start

Specific fears often respond in one to three sessions, so it helps to begin a few weeks before your trip. That leaves time to practise and, if you'd like, a final session close to the date.

Online or in person

Both work well for fears. Online sessions by Google Meet let you practise feeling calm in your own space, and in-person sessions in Forest Row suit anyone who prefers a room away from home.
